How is it physically possible to be addicted to video games and gambling?

Just wondering, I think it seem absurd that people can be addicted to an activity counted as a hobby. I mean a drug addiction is one thing but how can a person be physically addicted to video games?

You are confusing the issue, there are physical and mental addictions, affecting the body, mind or both. In some cases, drugs affect both, or only one- and things like video games and gambling affect only mental function. When a behavior becomes disruptive to normal functioning, or interferes with normal day to day activities, or becomes a threat to welfare, you have crossed the line between hobby and addiction. A hobby is something you do for pleasure, it should not induce a stress reaction if you can't do it. It also should not prevent you from being able to pay the bills on time, or risk the family home- as gambling can certainly do. Video games that keep you from interacting meaningfully with other people, or limit your conversational ability to gaming subjects also cross the line. You are not physically addicted in the sense that the body function will suffer if you withdraw the thing, but you are mentally addicted because it is interfering with your ability to function otherwise. Mental addictions are also the hardest to break. The body itself can remove most of the chemicals itself, if you aren't putting more in- it can't exactly purge the brain cells though. Either way- when something interferes with your ability to function normally, then you have a problem. It may have started as a hobby, like the odd dropping of coins in a bandit out of boredom, or the toke of a joint at a party. But when it becomes the center of your existance, and you don't function without it- you have an addiction, physical or mental as the case may be.

How do I know if am addicted to video games?

How do I know if I am addicted to video games....I play video games (xbox) and it has been to the point that I have thought about going to the pawn shop to get money for the newest game I want....????

There's a difference between being addicted and just enjoying something. If you think about it, everyone in the world is addicted to food. They have it roughly three times a day, would trade anything for it, and would die without it. So basically, what I'm saying is there's a big, thick, glow-in-the-dark line that you have to cross before you're addicted to video games. If anyone ever comments on it ("Wow, you play a LOT of video games," or "Dude, you've been gaining weight recently."), that's a sure sign you need to cut back. Wanting to go to the pawn shop to get money isn't the greatest idea, but it's not a bad sign if you were only pawning stuff that you don't really need or isn't particularly important to you or your family.

My 11 year old brother is addicted to video games?

My brother is sooo addicted thats all he does 24/7. He does NOTHING else. He used to play outside and do a lot of sports...How can i make him stop playing video games?

Ok this is what you do to REALLY GET HIM OFF GAMES. When your computer starts up press F12 repeatedly until you get this blue screen. Huntaround the options and hit disable IDE chipset. This will stop the DVD drive from opening and thus stoping him from playing games. IF there online games then download zone alarm and hit the INTERNET BLOCK button and hide zone alarm.

If its console games then hide the controlers.

Is anybody you know addicted to video games?

My husband cannot stop playing this video game. It's a multi-person online game, and when he's in a battle he can't even answer a question or pass me anything, and these battles last up to 10 minutes it seems, but he has been playing this game for the last three days nonstop when he's awake. He spent all night last night until 5:30 am playing the same game. I think he's addicted. Is this normal? I hate it because I hate war and talking about blood and guts and violence. How can people like that stuff?

Well first of all I'm a girl and I'm not sure about addicted...But I go on marathon binges of video games...up to 13-14 hours at a time. If he just discovered this game he'll probably play it quite a bit until he get's burnt out on it. It's entertaining...especially if you're playing against other people and EXTREMELY competitive. He'll eventually get over it though so it's not something you should worry about.

Can video games boost memory, thinking skills in the elderly?

Having received a 1.2million-dollar grant for the study as part of the federal stimulus package, researchers at North Carolina State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology now hope that their findings will eventually pave the way for a prototype video game that will be helpful in boosting thinking skills among old people.

The researchers have revealed that their research will run in two phases.

In phase one, they will ascertain whether certain qualities that can be found in video games result in improved cognitive functioning in older adults. Cognitive functioning refers to memory, problem-solving, critical thinking and other mental skills.

Dr. Anne McLaughlin, assistant professor of Psychology at NC State and the principal investigator (PI) for the grant, explains that the first phase asks: “What qualities does a game need to contain to improve cognition? We want to determine the components an effective game should have.”

The second phase will begin after the researchers have determined which qualities result in the most significant improvements, and it will focus on the development of a set of guidelines that can be used to design a new class of video game for older adults, as well as a prototype video game that follows those guidelines.
