The Meth epidemic is bringing growing destruction to individuals, families and communities. You never use Meth #39;just once#39;. If you are ...
I need to no how meth affects the brain (i.e meth might increase a certain type of neurotransmitter that causes meth abuse) and any other biological cause for the addiction
There are CAUSES of the addiction and COMSEQUENCES of such.
There are no known predisposing (genetic or otherwise) factors that will "push" anybody into metamphetamine addiction, as it happens with alcohol, for instance.
However, depressed people, looking for a "high" state, are naturally more prone to seek the stimulant effects of meta-amphetamines....
The effects on the brain, are basically, to mimick the actions of adrenaline and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), resulting in stimulation of the cortex and braistem structures, that give us the alert state (hypervigilant state), with some degree of excitation, insomnia and euphoria (a false sensation of well-being)
As it happens with other amphetamines, when somebody uses it, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, inflamation of some vessels in the base of the brain (arteritis) and many other will ensue.
If taken (or inhaled, as is the case of crystal) for several days, dependance is the rule, because when you stop taking them, the amount of adrenaline and norepinephrine in the brain, are not capable of giving that "high" state of mind...after depleting the brain of those normal substances, depression (sometimes severe) is the rule...
The difficulty here is, that crystal has to be inhaled to make it effective, and is extremely addictive, because it takes effect in the first two or three inhalations (seconds literally) and the euphoria and excitation are quite substantial with this meta amph....and so are the risks..

I know someone who has used any type of speed he could get his hands on for the last 10 years. His drug of choice for the last few years has been crystal meth, or ice as it is called. He really wants to just have a normal life now but this addiction has a hold on him that he can't get loose from. I heard methadone clinics can help with this but I can't find anything on the net about it.
Hi, I am on Methadone Maintenance from addiction to Meth,we call it crank, over 15 years.
It depends how much Methadone it takes to make this person "comfortable",weather or not he will become addicted to the methadone.
The clinic I go to has 165 people there and alot of them get off it after a while.I will be taking it for the rest of my life, but that is ok with me.
You can Email me if you have any other Questions.
An old friend of mine, has recently gotten back into his gambling addiction, BIG TIME. He was also once into meth. If he has started gambling again, do you think he is probably back on meth again too?
Gambling addiction can be very serious. Many everyday people have lost jobs, friends, and loved ones simply because they could not break thier gambling habits. I suggest you seek some help. I found a site that has addiction information and a list of addiction treatment centers so you can help. http://www.addictionselfhelp.com

If she is not ready for help, There is absolutely nothing you can do except to wait until she is ready or give up now.
If she is ready and your willing, Be prepared for the most difficult and trying task that you have ever faced.
Addiction takes many years to overcome.

Clay sculpturing « The Aesthetic Elevator
From sculptor Phillipe Faraut’s website :
This 4 minute 54 second video clip started out as a family project intended to show the artist’s two young daughters the potential effects that drugs, particularly methamphetamines, can have on the human face. Faraut concentrated on the emaciation that occurs from the loss of appetite that all addicts of meth suffer. One of the challenges was to represent the mental state associated with drug addiction; mostly emptiness and lack of stamina. Both the original sculpture of the young mother and the final version are discussed in Faraut’s book Mastering Portraiture: Advanced Analyses of the Face Sculpted in Clay. Music by William Boutwell.
The music doesn’t suit the subject matter very well in my opinion, but it’s a very nice five minute demonstration of how to sculpt in clay, especially for people who aren’t accustomed to the medium.

Until a few years ago, methamphetamine was considered a regional problem. Largely confined to the West Coast and Southwest, it was off the radar of federal drug offices in Washington, D.C. But as the drug swept into rural Midwestern communities in the mid-1990s, catching hospitals and treatment centers unprepared for its devastating effects, steps were taken to gain a better understanding of meth’s toll on the body.
Methamphetamine, like cocaine , is a powerful stimulant. It produces physiological changes similar to the fight-or-flight response — it boosts heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and body temperature. Some people use it for the brief, intense “rush” it produces when smoked or injected. Others use it for functional reasons — as an appetite suppressant to lose weight or as an energy-booster to enable them to work more. When snorted or taken orally it doesn’t produce an intense “rush” but rather a “high” that can last more than 12 hours.
