I'm a video game addict, how do I cut down my addiction and start looking for motivation to learn?

I've recently have started playing a MMORPG and I've been playing more and more. Sometimes upto 6 or more hours. It's my final year in college and I really want do well this year but already I've started to start skipping lessons, not doing homework and I'm even not going out with my friends. I'm just spending most of my time on the internet and playing this god forsaken game. It's making me more stressful and angry and I've even began telling my own mother to "shut up". This is just plain wrong and I know it is. No-One should ever talk to their own mother like that and when I do say it, it hurts inside.

My friend just rang me asking me if anything is the matter but I just told him nothing is the matter and said that stuff keeps coming up.

Please, please Y! Community, how can I stop this internet and video game addiction and start getting my head down, studying more and enjoy life outside my bedroom?

I'm so scared that I'm going to end up living out on the street when I'm older.

Unplug your computer and throw away the power cord. Ok seriously. My brother is the same way and I hate to say it but...he's 33 years old now and STILL on the internet playing games and has no life other than that. Do you want that to become you? Probably not. I'm sure a girlfriend would help too. Also if you are open about your problem with your friends then they could help you out with it! And plan things to get you out of your room. Don't hide the fact, tell them what's up...

Help I am a video game/ warcraft/ computer/ internet addict HOW DO I STOP!!?

I am totally addicted to the computer, war craft, video games, and the internet. The video game addiction started six years ago, I played my first console video game and was hooked. The War craft addiction started last year when I received War craft as a birthday present. And the computer/ internet addiction, well that started only recently (like 7 or 8 months ago). I am so addicted that when I wake up (which is usually early like 6-7 a.m.) I will go on the computer for up to 3 hours until I get hungry and go downstairs to get food and start the day. I need help to not become addicted!!

perfectly normal.

i have the same thing, but im stopping now.

they thing i do is, im starting to go out more often, play pool or bowling whatever.

in the internet, i just try to go onto forums or some photoshop instead ot my usual dota or tower defence on warcraft bnet.

its just a phase your going through, i was a major hardcore gamer, now im just a hobbyist on the computer, soon you will get bored and then stop, since your playing for a long time.

Does everyone here agree that there is a video game addiction?

I believe there is. My son flunked his way out of college and moved out when I cut off his internet/gaming access.

Absolutely. Human beings have inherently addictive personalities. Anything that somebody can enjoy on any level can become psychologically addictive. Video games are no exception. Hell, you only need to spend 10 minutes in the World of Warcraft to know that hundreds of thousands of kids are addicted to video games right now as we speak!

Internet and game addiction?

I have a bad addiction to video games and using the internet. I cannot stop. My family has noticed just how much time I spend on both. I want to be more responsible with games and the internet but I just cannot control myself. I want to do better things in my life. Please give me some advice to help me get over these addiction. Thank you.

WOW i have been there. The games can be so much fun that you just can't stop or don't want to stop playing. Sometimes i would be up playing till 2 - 3am. Then my pc went down and i had to reinstall windows. When i tried to reinstall my games one disk had a scratch, etcc.. Well lets just say i don't play anymore. I could have gone and bought new games but i knew if i did it would be the same thing all over again. so just uninstall the games and give the disk to your parents tell them to hold onto them for a week take kind of a vacation and keep busy for that week. See how that works.

What are some examples of Internet addiction? Discuss how video games may fit in this category.?

The NEED to log in and use the Internet, not to be confused with desire, but actually feeling negatively if you don't log in is a sign of addiction. Addicts are on EVERY day, sometimes for hours a day.

The proliferation of online social networks and video games has led to the rise of what many psychologists are calling a very real phenomenon: internet addiction. And college students, researchers say, are particularly vulnerable to pathological computer use, because they are living by themselves for the first time and have uninhibited access to games and sites like Facebook and Twitter. Key words: internet addiction, video game addiction, college counseling, addiction abuse, education technology

Are you spending sleepless hours trying to master World of Warcraft? Would you rather send a friend a text mesage than meet in person? Do you sometimes fall asleep at the keyboard?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you may have an Internet addiction. But now there's help. The reStart Internet Addiction Recovery Program -- a first of its kind center in the U.S. -- recently opened its doors on a tranquil 5-acre spread in Fall City just a few miles away from Microsoft's headquarters.

Most people go to treatment for cocaine or booze, but the creators of reStart say Internet addiction is a growing problem.

The 45-day program -- which costs $14,500 -- is designed specifically "to help internet and video game addicts overcome their dependence on gaming, gambling, chatting, texting and other aspects of Internet Addiction," according to the press release.

It goes on to say that as much as 10 percent of the online population is dependent on various aspects of the Internet, with the directors of the center noting that similar programs have arisen in places like China and South Korea.
