i want to change and focus more into school and my hockey. But, instead of doing school work..i spend over 5 hrs a day on the computer, xbox, I want to stop it and i just cant. I want to start lifting weights for hockey because im not gettin any playing time..i want to change and get rid of the habit of going on for hours..please help :(
That is one difficult habit to break...I have the same thing with tv...of course my husband needs to have an LCD in every room. The only thing that worked for me was getting rid of cable, tv, etc...computers are more difficult. Simply try not to go to websites you have been visiting because they can be addictive (such as myspace) or this one! ;)

Someone I know can't get off of the computer. If he is not on the computer, he is upset and won't do anything else. he doesn't like to read or anything else. All he does is play games on the computer. What do You suggest?
Like any addiction, the addict must see that they are addicted and want to stop...otherwise you are wasting your time.
Talk to him about the situation.
Have him set reasonal limits on his computer use.
Take him away from the tempation and give him something else to do. (movies that he likes not you, sports events, bowling, skating..just to name a few)
Please I need help. My grades dropped down last semester. I barely have a desire to eat when I am on. I slept on my computers on most days. When I am sleeping, all I think about is when I will be able to log on tomorrow morning.
I know this is not a healthy living habit and I do try to change. I go to several counselors; they don't seem to care. I ask my parents for help. Their answer: "How could you have computer addiction? It's not a disease." I even nearly threw my computer down a cliff but someone stopped me thinking that I was attempting a suicide.
At least I do have one positive side effect. I learn most computer languages online but I am not planning to become a computer programmer because I realize how overpowering computer programming is to have the power in taking over my life.
By now you're probably think I am crazy. I admit it too but I just need someone who has gone through addiction and overcame it to tell me how to stop mine. Thanks.
you really have to take control again. set a limit to how long you are online for fun etc and how long you are on to study then switch the thing off. I may be am not the best person to say this as its 4 am in the morning here in the UK and I am still up on the darn thing lol. but really switch it off take a walk with out taking the laptop with you. get out do fun other things find something else you like doing. anything as long as ifs safe and its not the computer. take care
How does the overuse of computers effect our daily lives? What are some of it's consequences? Are there any benefits? Are people trying to improve the ways people use computers? What health conditions can be associated with too much computer usage? Are there ways to prevent them? Are there bigger, more underlying problems? Has our culture been changed by computers? What are the pros and cons to this? How are individuals effected by computer addiction? How is the economy effected by it? etc etc
People aimlessly and incessantly playing meaningless "games" might have less time to devote to thinking about what they can do to improve the detrimental effect we are having on our environment - at worst, an addiction to computers among the general public could act as another opiate of the masses.
But it can also help people to mobilise action on such and other issues.
We are more accessible than ever before (what with mobile phones, Blackberrys etc.), which can intrude massively on our interactions with the people whose company we happen to be sharing. It can allow work to trespass into private time, which will affect our personal relationships, which will in turn make it more likely that our society will become more fragmented. People in fragmented societies tend to feel less empathy or sympathy for others.
It also allows companies to bombard us with a constant barrage of advertising, most of which is not intellectually stimulating and in any case is replaced very shortly afterwards by yet another advertising message. I am sure that our average attention span is shortening, although we can probably skim through more material more effectively than any other generation. We seem however to be losing our appetite for considered, in-depth analysis as a result.
On the other hand, it allows people to communicate far more easily with those they care about, even if they are on the other side of the planet. That can't be all bad.
I am an addict! I watch TV about 5 hours a day and use the computer about 3 every day! I don't know what to do? I just want to watch what is happening in the world, see new movies and make programs and make hacks on my computer! Help?
Is there annonym tv-colics
Try to know how to divert your mind by taking interests in variety of other things like music, sketching and drawing, cooking, cleaning the house, re-arranging your household articles, helping your parents, doing some social service in your community, joining some yoga classes. I mean you should engage your self in many other areas whether you like it or not. Then this addiction to TV and computer will go away. Try to know how to assign priorities and have a time management programme.
