I heard some kids in school talking about a holistic approach in relation to drug and alcohol addiction. Does anybody know more about it? I'm just interested.
I think it's a special program given to people who are suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction. They provide treatment and services to help the patient recover faster. There's a website about the Holistic Approach. I added the link below. It's really informative.
I've had alcohol problem and i quit drinking months ago, but i'm still getting cravings. I thought once you go cold turkey these feelings would stop after a matter of weeks! How long does it usually take for an addiction to go before you can start drinking again?
You can't. An addiction like this is something you can learn to control, but never get rid of. If you ever drink again, it is most likely that you will succumb to your addiction again and end up where you were all those months ago. You may feel those cravings on and off for the rest of your life.
When you do a program like Alcoholics Anonymous, they explain all of this to you. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, whether you ever touch the booze again or not. Your choice is between being a non-drinking alcoholic or not. Unfortunately, you can't just wait for the addiction to pass, like a cold, and then go back to your old ways and not expect to still be addicted.
I'd advise you to get help, if you're having trouble staying sober.

I have a friend who stopped drinking alcohol two days ago and she has been experiencing what seems to me like withdrawal symptoms. She's always craving alcohol and gets clammy hands. I told her these are signs that she should get herself treated for addiction but she won't listen to me. Am I right? If so, what can I do?
Your friend does have mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. (other signs would be restlessness, insomnia, dreams of alcohol, hallucinations...) These are indeed signs that she should get herself treated for her alcohol addiction. The best thing you can do is to get her checked up by a doctor and he will then assess your friend's condition. Your friend needs to be treated for her withdrawal. If she's not swayed by your pleas, you can do an alcohol intervention for her.
Mom has an addiction to alcohol. How can I step in this personal problem? I live close to Rutland, Vermont. Are there any municipal or cooperative or private firms would help me do what's right for this situation?

“It very slowly and subtly reawakens addiction,” Pinsky said of pain medication in an interview Saturday. “I’m not saying it was inappropriately prescribed, I’m saying he didn’t know the risks.”
DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, was found dead in his apartment Friday evening. A crack pipe and prescription pills were found in the Manhattan apartment, said a law enforcement official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.
Goldstein was 36 years old.
Pinsky is the host of VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab,” where he helps troubled stars get off of drugs and alcohol.
Pinsky said he believed pain medication Goldstein took for injuries sustained in the plane crash that required two skin graft surgeries reawakened his addiction to drugs. Goldstein had long preached sobriety and openly discussed his earlier addictions to drugs including crack cocaine and Ecstasy.

Drug and alcohol addiction can destroy many lives. The patient is not the only one affected but also his family, relatives, friends, and all those who care for him. This makes immediate treatment vital once perceived.
A lot of different components are taken into account to treat this chronic disease. It is chronic in the sense that there could be relapse or recurrence after an abstinence of long periods just like diabetes, asthma and hypertension.
For this reason, repeated treatments are sometimes needed before one can actually say safely that he is cured from the addiction. Treatment can happen by developing a program must be developed based on the needs of the patient.
Two types of treatments can be done to drug or alcohol dependents, the inpatient (or residential type) or the outpatient. The financial capability as well as the severity of the illness may decide which type the patient should choose.
The inpatient treatment is the usual preference of the patients who already have a history of substance use. The primary advantage of this type of treatment is that it is administered in a highly structured environment. Thus, the patient is given close and constant supervision. Inpatient treatment could last from six to twelve months. Two months from this period may involve very intense treatment. Inpatient treatment concentrates on changing the patient’s behavior in order to make it easy for him to fit back into the community.
